Finally …
I had an opportunity to head out and shoot this morning for the first time in a month. This is the first weekend day without snow and with temperature above 20 degrees since Jan. 16.
We still have deep snow on the ground. And 23 degrees is still cold. But it was still an OK morning to shoot.
I went to Blendon Woods Metro Park, a local park where I typically see Northern Cardinals during the winter. They gather in trees near a feeder, which provides the potential for nice photos if I can get in position without scaring them off. …
Snow on the trails
Another weekend, another snowfall. We had about four inches of snow last night, wrapping up a pretty miserable February. According to TV news this morning, the new snow gives us 30 inches for the month – a record February for this area.

I did get out with the camera this morning, but decided to do something a bit different. Instead of taking the big lens (the 600mm f/4) and shooting birds, I carried some shorter glass and walked one of the trails in Highbanks Metro Park north of Columbus.
DC and back
I had to be in Washington, DC, yesterday for some meetings and a charity dinner. After the foot of snow we had Monday and Monday night I was concerned about the Tuesday morning flight being cancelled or delayed significantly.
Turns out the flight was delayed almost three hours, but the weather had nothing to do with it. Instead, the delay was caused by a “mechanical” problem – a malfunctioning pilot’s seat. According to the gate personnel, the bolt that keeps the seat back upright had sheered off and it took a couple of hours to replace the bolt. …
Brrrrrrr … again
I had planned on shooting today. The equipment was set up – 600mm f/4L on my Canon EOS 7D with Speedlites, PocketWizards and batteries bagged and ready – so I could run out the door to a local park that typically has Cardinals gathering near a feeder on snow-covered days like this.
That was the plan, anyway.
When I got up this morning, it was 13 degrees – much colder than I had expected. Add the 15-inch snow cover to the temperature and it’s MUCH too cold for me to spend a couple of hours outside shooting birds.
